Rachel’s Confession for the Holidays

December 15, 2010 //  by Rachel Kent//  10 Comments

Blogger: Rachel Kent

Location: Books & Such main office, Santa Rosa, Calif.

Confession time. I don’t cook. Everyone else at Books & Such seems to enjoy the culinary arts. I’ve never been much of an artist of any sort. There are those who make masterpieces and those who appreciate them. I appreciate. Food always tastes better when someone else cooks it anyway!

Don’t worry, I can cook simple things for my husband and me (we don’t eat out all the time), but I would never attempt to host Thanksgiving or Christmas. I don’t have patience for such extravagant meals, and it’s not fun for me like it is for some.

I have some cookbook apps on my phone. They were free; so I decided I might as well download them in case of an emergency. I haven’t had to use them yet. 🙂 I actually don’t think I’ve even opened them.

Thankfully my parents, my husband’s parents, my brother and my sister-in-law all enjoy cooking. My plan is to get invited over to one of their houses for all of the holiday meals to come. We might even go to two houses in a day! We’ll bring the delightful company, and they can provide the delicious food! 🙂

It feels nice to have that out in the open! I hope you all get to enjoy wonderful food this year.

I’m with you, Rachel. I bet there are millions of non-cookers (or in my case, POOR cookers) lurking out there. And when you try to learn, well, have you ever read any of those supposedly simple cook books? Puh-lease.

I think this book title would be the next million-dollar seller: Healthy Meals You Can Make in Twenty Minutes, With Five Ingredients All Found At Walmart.

    I’m just sayin’.

I don’t enjoy cooking, either. I’m not a terrible cook, it’s just not my favorite way to spend time. If I could afford it, I’d hire a cook and a housekeeper. I figure that would be a good way to provide desperately needed jobs for people who like to work at such things.

Unfortunately, God has not yet gotten lined up with my agenda here.

Some fun quotes… (not targeted at you, Rachel 🙂 )

She did not so much cook as assassinate food.”
    Storm Jameson (Margaret)

“My mother was a good recreational cook, but what she basically believed about cooking was that if you worked hard and prospered, someone else would do it for you.”
    Nora Ephron

    “I can’t cook. I use a smoke alarm as a timer.”
    Carol Siskind, American Comedianne.

Hey, if someone’s going to cook it, it has to be eaten! So sounds like you’ve got your job cut out for you! Each person has their own individual gift, you know. (Like in Romans 12:4-8) 😉

Enjoy that delicious cooking! I’m sure you’ll be the most delightful company for your family.

I have definitely “learned” to cook over the years. It never came easy to me. Lots and lots of practice. And many mistakes. Like you, I sure appreciate when others cook for me.

All good cooks need to have good eaters come over to enjoy the fruits of their labor. You’re fulfilling a very important role, Rachel! 😉

Rachel, my husband and I laugh because I “couldn’t cook cereal” when we got married. Over the years, I’ve experimented with different recipes and evolved into a decent cook.

You can’t go wrong with any of Giada deLaurentiis’ recipes!

My first year as a married woman produced some – um, memorable culinary moments. The turkey gravy that was solid – yes, solid. The lopsided layer cake that resulted from trying to squish two cake pans in our miniature Married Student Housing oven. The frosting on that cake that I didn’t beat enough – and it oozed down the side of the cake like marshmallow cream. Breaking two hand mixers. Macaroni and cheese with mozzarella (don’t try it).

Like writing, cooking is best learned by trial and error. Heavy on the error 🙂
