Blogger: Rachelle Gardner
Writers spend a lot of time discussing the ideal of “making a living as a writer” and whether or not to quit that pesky day job. I thought it would be fun for us to to hear what everyone’s day job actually is. What do you do when you’re not writing books or lurking on agent blogs?
I’ll start. I’m Rachelle and I’m a literary agent. 🙂 I could also list coach, blogger, editor, hiker, puppy-raiser, and mom of teens.
And you are . . . ?
Tell us in the comments. Let’s get to know each other!
Richard Mabry
I’m Richard–I’m a retired physician, a writer, an occasional golfer, an avid reader, and probably the world’s best grandfather.
Rachelle Gardner
I have no doubt you’re the WORLD’S BEST. 🙂
rachel mcmillan
i work in educational publishing! which is fab because i get to see a lot of the intricate behind-the-scenes things that are similar to trade publishing but from a different angle.
our pub committee meetings are very different than the ones my books go to when my agent sends them out there, but the principles are the same
Rachelle Gardner
What a neat perspective!
Andrew Budek-Schmeisser
I’m Andrew, and I still am.
Shirlee Abbott
And we are glad!
Rachelle Gardner
You ARE. And that’s what matters.
Meghan M. Gorecki
I am an aspiring/in training editor, book blogger/reviewer and indie author aspiring to attain the title of hybrid author. Recovering from two hip replacements this year means all this IS my day job for another 2-3 months of intensive therapy and rehab before I go back out into the world to find an admin/secretarial/receptionist type job somewhere. 🙂
Rachelle Gardner
Day job: healing. That’s a hard job!
MacKenzie Willman
The primary caregiver of three physically/mentally handicapped adult housemates/family.
Rachelle Gardner
My goodness, that’s a big job. Bless you!
Shelia Stovall

Librarians are my favorite! 🙂
Shelia Stovall
Thank you, and authors are my favorite.

Day job: health care quality in a hospital setting.
All-the-time job: pastor’s wife
Fun job: grandma
*Today, on my day job, I am wading through measure methodology from the federal government, muttering at the use (abuse?) of language: “half of hospitals will have more predicted readmissions than expected readmissions.” –sigh–
Rachelle Gardner
Clearly they NEED you!
Tama Fortner
Ghostwriter and freelance editor.
Also avid coffee drinker–but, sadly, I don’t get paid for that one! 🙂
Rachelle Gardner
Oh man. If ONLY we could get paid per cup for our stellar coffee-drinking!
Lindsay Harrel
I’m Lindsay and I’m a writer and stay-at-home mommy to the most adorable toddler in the world (yeah, I’m biased). During his nap time, I teach online English classes and do freelance work–everything from editing university curriculum to writing ad copy. I love the flexibility of what I do.
Rachelle Gardner
I love the flexibility of what you do, too. 🙂
Brenda
Therapist, school counselor, life coach, speaker, writer, small business woman, advocate, former teach, wife. Mom of four.
Lara Hosselton
Former teacher’s assistant in Exceptional Education. I now work part time as a personal assistant, housekeeper and driver for two elderly ladies on my street. Some days I spend more time just chatting with them than actually working, but that might be the most important need of the day.
Kay Kauffman
I’m Kay. I’m a legal secretary, a has-been reporter, a wife, a sister, a mom to four crazy kids, a band geek for life, a recovering pack-rat, a blog lurker, a reader, a photographer, a poet, a blogger, and an aspiring novelist. Gee, no wonder I’m so tired all the time… 😀
Susie Finkbeiner
I’m a mom!
Jenny Leo
I’m a freelance copywriter, editor, and journalist.
David A. Todd
I’m a civil engineer, for the last 42 years, mainly in the design of public infrastructure and some in private development, currently serving as our corporate trainer. I’ll be doing that for the next 2 years, 5 months, and 24 days, since my $6 per .onth aveage royalties are not quite enough to live on.
Jane daly
Bank manager by day, blogger by night
Heidi Kneale (Her Grace)
IT Support. Mostly I work part-time, which supports my writing career nicely (enough time to write, but enough money for marketing, etc).
However, this month I’ve been full-time. While the splendiferous amount of money is nice, I have no time for working on my writing career.
Nicholas Faran
I’ve been an astrophysicist, rocket scientist, software engineer and ultimately settled into a career as a simulation engineer. I get to use cool applications that allow me to model real world machines in the digital world. (making up other world’s, not so very different from writing fiction 🙂 ).
I am a dad, husband and avid board gamer. I also love to get out into nature and explore this wonder of creation.
(I’m also a terrible typist on touch screen mobiles! 🙂 )
Kristen Joy Wilks
Ooooh, my husband has a collection of over 200 board games, I know that is small for serious gamers, but seems impressive to those who haven’t seen a board game collection before. He runs CamasCon, a camp for board gamers. Such a fun hobby/obsession. It’s always fun to meet another gamer.
Toni Wilbarger
I have been a church secretary for almost 15 years. Our church is over 150 years old, and we have over 1,000 members, so my job is not always easy!
Kristen Joy Wilks
I’m Kristen–Mom of three fantastically rowdy boys (12, 10, & 8) the wrangler of a 94 pound pup who is 1 year old and still learning her manners, wife of a camp director and therefore camp blog writer, sometimes camp newsletter writer, camp photographer, and the person that the girl counselors come to when they are baffled by their cabin of girls and need the opinion of someone old, I also volunteer at my boys’ schools and don’t do the laundry or dishes fast enough for more than 2.5 seconds of clean to stick to our house.
Jackie Lea Sommers
I’m a recruiter for a Christian college by day, YA author by night (and weekends!). 🙂
Davalynn Spencer
I’m an author, journalist, columnist, adjunct prof teaching creative writing, mom of two, wife of one, keeper of mouse detectors Annie and Oakley, and seeker of anyone who would like to take one or more of six kittens.
